B-6 for side effects

Margie's picture

I have read about supplementing vitamin B-6 to help with side effects of seizure medication. Andy is on Keppra and Lamictal. He didin't seem to have any side effects with Lamictal but since adding Keppra has. I have purchased a chewable b-6/magnesium wafer from Kirkman. They are 50 mg. I wondered if any of you all do this and if it has helped. Also, what dose. I have read anywhere from 50-100 mg per day. Margie

Dose

Hi --
I don't supplement B6 for Sarah other than a multi-vitamin, but I know other people do.

B6 is a water-soluble vitamin, so, theoretically, excess amounts can just be excreted. In practice, though, supplements over a long time in high doses can cause a reversible condition called sensory neuropathy. It's been reported in people (adults) taking more than 1000 mg./day for several weeks. Obviously, the toxic dose for kids is lower.

Here's a link to a summary of research on B6 (plus magnesium, because they're often bundled) in autism. I thought you might be interested because Andy has ASD, too. If you scroll down to the bottom where the most recent studies are, you can see that they used doses of 14-20 milligrams per kilogram of body weight per day.

To figure out his weight in kilograms, divide his weight in pounds by 2.2 or use a converter.
Hope this helps!
