Embarrassed in Public - Has this Happened to You?

Amber Kane's picture

It happened again.

Standing in the hallway of my daughter's elementary school, my 12 year old son with autism began screaming, yelling, and banging his head. Let's just say it drew a lot of attention from the other parents and, for the first time in a long time, I felt really embarrassed.

The 1998 film ‘First Do No Harm’ starring Meryl Streep portrays one mother’s battle against the medical system and it’s treatment of her son Robbie who has epilepsy.

One of her major problems is that the doctors insist on pumping her child full of drugs, which have no impact on his seizures and simply exacerbate the problem by making him sicker.

If you like to visit theme parks when you travel and epilepsy is the disorder you or a loved one suffers from, then you are going to want to be well-informed before riding on any attraction.

The Epilepsy Foundation has produced an excellent video aimed at educating teenagers about people who suffer from epilepsy. Kids with Autism- Communication Skills Indicate Outcome

Amber Kane's picture

It isn't something I like to think about too much or I begin to feel sad, overwhelmed and anxious. Despite my hesitancy to linger in the realm of 'what if', I need to be realistic and understand that my son might not have an adult life simliar to mine. When it comes to autism the biggest indicator of how well a child will do as an adult (by way of how far they will progress developmentally) is verbal communication. This is why everyday, and I'm not kidding, I work on communication with my two boys.

The Modified Atkins Diet - Stop Seizures With Food

Jessica Clark's picture

It seems there is hope for people with epilepsy that their seizures can be controlled by diet alone. Low carbohydrate diets like the Atkins diet and modified Atkins diet have been proven to reduce seizures.

The way the diet works is by switching what the body uses as a source of energy. Instead of carbohydrates getting converted into glucose for energy, fat is converted into fatty acids, which puts your body in a state of ketosis. The ketogenic diet is diet that does this and has been used successfully on people with epilepsy, and for some the modified Atkins diet works in a similar way to the ketogenic diet.

Parent Support for Kids with Special Needs Turns Ugly!

Amber Kane's picture

Every so often it happens and, when it does, I'm so upset by it I need days to recover. At my last meeting, full of parents with children that have special needs, the mom's starting attacking each other verbally. Usually this scenario plays out whenever diet and biomedical interventions are discussed, but the topic was staying home with your children, as opposed to working full-time and, boy oh boy, were there a lot of opinions on the matter!

Jessica Clark's picture

This year, both state and federal legislation passed a law called the Diastat Bill to help improve the lives of people, including children, who suffer from seizures. The bill will enable trained volunteers at schools to assist and give medicine to children who have seizures without a nurse being present, ensuring their seizures stay under control better. As a result, children with epilepsy education may improve and will result in better control over their seizures.
