Hollywood star Meryl Streep was so moved by the Abrahams’ story that she decided to become involved in the fight to inform parents about the ketogenic diet. She narrates and introduces the information video made by the Charlie Foundation which is available to parents across the world.
Streep was close friends with movie director Jim Abrahams, who asked for her help to increase awareness of the ketogenic diet as a treatment for childhood epilepsy. His son Charlie was successfully prescribed the diet and after a few days his seizures ceased completely.
The Charlie Foundation was set up by the Abrahams to help make parents aware of this effective treatment for childhood epilepsy. The video is part of that aim, showing step by step preparation of the meals, options available on the ketogenic diet, as well as interviews with parents discussing with doctors their queries and concerns, such as high cholesterol levels.
The introduction to the video by Meryl Streep begins with a letter she received from her friends, the Abrahams. In the letter father Jim describes the onset of the seizures as “the beginning of an agony I am without words to describe,” certainly a sentiment many parents would empathise with. As a friend of the family, Streep saw Charlie and his parents undergo the daily battle with his seizures, and cannot believe that no one advised them about the diet, which could have saved 9 months of seizures and over $100,000 in medical and drug treatment.
250,000 copies of the 45 minute video have been distributed since it was first released in the mid 1990s. It can be purchased direct from the Charlie foundation for $10 (to cover postage and packaging).
