Sobering Statistics about Epilepsy (Video)

When a child is first diagnosed with epilepsy it can be very scary, especially if the parents are not familiar with the disorder. The unfortunate reality is that over 40 million people worldwide suffer from epilepsy. It is estimated that between 40-60% of those people have no response to medications. Approximately 1% of those people will die from sudden death. With statistics like that, parent’s fears about epilepsy are not only real, but valid.

What do you do if you are one of the parents that’s tried everything? Every medication, every diet, alternative therapies, and even surgery have all failed….then what? There are really only two things left to do. Join a support group along with other parents who are living with the same thing as you, and have hope. While hope may seem like something that has been shattered after every pill, every treatment, and every therapy, there is comfort in knowing that there are many people wanting to succeed in finding a cure. Some of the best and brightest young researchers and doctors are doing everything they can. There are people in the medical field who have dedicated their lives to finding a cure.

Support Groups Can Offer Comfort

Support groups are a great idea for anyone dealing with epilepsy. Parents of children with epilepsy can go to a support group and find other people who are living with the same heartache, pain, frustration, and fear. Knowing that you are not alone can be helpful in and of itself.

If you live far from a support group there are groups available online. These are great places to meet others who are in your same situation. Emailing back and forth can be a way of being able to vent as well as support others dealing with epilepsy just like you. While there is no cure, it can make a world of difference to talk with others about what they have tried, what has or hasn’t worked for them, and even about the latest advancements. New therapies are being worked on all the time. One may be being worked on right now that in the near future will help. Until there is a cure for everyone, keep hope alive and find solace in those who are living under the same circumstances.
