November is Epilepsy Awareness Month, but for those living with the disorder or a caregiver, making others aware is not an activity that only takes place in November. Making people aware of the disorder can help those who are unfamiliar with it know the true causes and symptoms, and help to eliminate negative viewpoints or stereotypes. Epilepsy has been around most likely since the beginning of man. It is referred to in both Babylonian tablets as well as the Bible. Even though the disorder has been affecting people for thousands of years, there are still many misconceptions and stigmas surrounding it.
Education is Key
People who have epilepsy are no different from other people. They are able to hold jobs, succeed in sports, and participate in daily life the same as many others. While there are situations in which they need to use caution, such as near water or while cooking, a person with epilepsy can lead a full life and enjoy many things.
There is no reason to be afraid or uncomfortable if you are around a person with epilepsy. Knowing how to help a person who may have a seizure can ease stress for those who might be nervous about one happening. It is important to know a few things:
- If you are near a person who you think is going to have a seizure, gently helpthem to the ground.
- Never put anything in the mouth of a person having a seizure, as they may bitea piece off and choke.
- Help a person onto their side so they don’t choke on any excess fluids that maybe in their mouth.
- Make sure there are no sharp objects or anything else the person could hurtthemselves on.
- If the person continues to seize more than five minutes, call 911.

If you know someone who suffers from seizures, you can ask them about their experience. Most people who have epilepsy would be glad to talk about their experiences if they know someone is interested in learning.
