Advocacy resources are widely available, but finding information that applies to your specific situation can be challenging. In the forum there’s a discussion about WrightsLaw, as it's an invaluable resource for parent advocates, especially those learning the fundamentals.
Here are a few other advocacy resources that may help (they have helped me)...
As Jenni says, WrightsLaw is a great resource. They have a companion web-site called Fetaweb also. The Wrightslaw home page has a direct link to Fetaweb, making it easy to find.
Partners in Policymaking; If you live in the States then chances are you have a state-wide Partners in Policymaking program. If you are unable to attend the program, you can learn the fundamentals in a distance format. A simple Google search, with your state and the program name, will give you the information you need to get started.
Your State Department of Education's newsletter, list-serv or e-zine; If you use your State DOE as a resource, you'll know of issues directly affecting your situation. You may be amazed at the amount of propositions, amendments, time-lines and other dynamics that impact your rights under special education law. You'll also learn of opportunities to voice your opinion on these matters.
Parent and Paid Advocates; often one in the same, many parent advocates are also paid advocates. If your region has a local Advocacy Center you can contact them and request an advocate assist you - this is usually at no cost to the family.
If you are searching for an advocate, I recommend starting with COPAA, which is the Council of Parent Attorneys and Advocates (a council to which I belong). You can search the web-site for an Attorney and/or Advocate in your area.
I'm a huge fan of local parent groups. Search Meetup for groups in your area. You can search by topic, location and more. Perhaps you will decide start one in your area!
Remember your rights and responsibilities are governed by many entities. There are Federal laws, State laws, and district policies.
There’s also a myriad of strategies and tactics to learn, so you can successfully advocate under those laws and policies. So if you become overwhelmed, take a step back, a deep breath and call in some support.
