Taking a vacation away is always a worry for parents. I don’t think there’s a Mom or Dad out there who doesn’t fret even more about their child’s safety while on vacation. We all have our homes fully equipped to protect our kids… from bedrails to stair gates, electric socket covers to door guards. But when it comes to your vacation, it’s almost impossible to find out in advance how child-friendly your room is going to be.
So you can’t fill your suitcase with child safety equipment, especially if you’re taking a flight to a far-off destination. But I don’t think the answer is to avoid travelling with children, not even those with special needs. The travelling experience is such a great learning for kids and a fun time when all the family get to relax together. I think the key is to plan ahead and invest in a few important items that will fit into your luggage easily.
I know one of the biggest worries Moms have is that their little one will fall out of bed in the night. That’s even more of a concern if your child has seizures. When you’re going on a trip you’re not going to be able to pack their bedrail… even if you could fit it into your suitcase how would you connect it to the hotel bed? There’s a really great product which is especially good for travelling. It’s an inflatable bed rail which is so easy to use. You just blow it up and connect the elasticized band around the mattress. It will fit onto any mattress size, including twin, double, bunk beds.
These bed bumper pads are also really easy to pack. They weigh less than 2 pounds and deflate and pack into a small carry case that’s only 10 by 8 inches. They’re really soft and will give you the peace of mind that your child won’t fall out of bed in the night.
What I really like about them is that they’re a good size when you blow them up, so they’re big enough to keep your child in bed. I’ve heard from other parents that they’ve really helped to give them a stress free holiday, without having to create a huge pillow pile beside the bed and constantly worry about every little noise in the night that it’s their son or daughter who’s fallen out of bed onto the hard floor.
The other good thing is that they’re made from quite a heavy vinyl so won’t puncture easily and are also really easy to clean. You just need to give them a wipe.
I think these are great for short and long trips. If your child is spending the night with their grandparents or friends you can just pack up their bed rail and pop it in their back pack. They’re also really great for home because they’re softer than a metal bed rail and have no need for fixings. Some tips I’ve heard from other parents using the inflatable bed rails is that you must make sure the straps are really tight so they keep in place. Also there is only one roll in a pack, so if the bed’s not against the wall you’ll need to buy two.
If you’re going on a vacation soon, I think these are one of those “must have” travel products to make sure your child is safe in bed at night. The last thing you want when you’re away is sleepless nights so you come home even more tired than before you left!
