Neurofeedback Therapy is a non-invasive technique which has been shown to improve brain function and reduce the frequency and severity of seizures in epilepsy sufferers.
Using a type of electroencephalogram (EEG), this groundbreaking complementary therapy helps an individual train their brain naturally to improve attention, focus and neurological activity related to many body functions. It has an application for a multitude of other brain and mood disorders, including ADHD, depression, autism, addiction, head injury, obsessive compulsive disorder, migraine and insomnia.
The technique draws on the brain’s own ability to learn and adapt and is suitable for both adults and children. Sensors are placed directly on the scalp which are read only, that is they are not sending any signals to the brain, simply receiving them. These sensors pick up and deliver brainwave information to a computer, which enables the patient to observe their own brain activity in ‘real time.’ This can be done in the form of a video game or visual and audio cues. Through one-on-one supervised tuition the patient is taught to self-regulate and normalise their brainwave patterns, with feedback through points on the game or an audio cue.
There has been a large body of published research that proves the effectiveness of neurofeedback therapy for many conditions. In the case of epilepsy, it has been shown to reduce the frequency and severity of seizures. For autism sufferers it can bring about changes in skill deficits and problem behaviour associated with the condition. Furthermore there are no reported side effects.
Taking Neurofeedback Therapy
One Stage Further
The Southwest Naturopathic Medical Center in Tempa, Arizona has designed a Neurofeedback Therapy Programme that integrates many different complementary techniques for the treatment of brain disorders. As Dr John Dye, the attending physician at the Southwest College of Naturopathic Medicine explains: “what excites me most is the potential for even more dramatic results when we prescribe complementary naturopathic remedies to stimulate and improve brain metabolism naturally. The possibility for combining neurofeedback protocols with nutritional and natural medicines, heavy metal detoxification and specific mind-body healing techniques have created new opportunities for clinical results far superior to either drug or neurofeedback therapy alone.”
The treatment begins with a comprehensive diagnosis and assessment of symptoms, health and family history. An individually tailor-made programme is designed for each patient that includes EEG brain mapping, cognitive function tests, metabolic factors, nutrient status, food allergies, heavy metal screening, environmental factor screening, as well as neurofeedback therapy.
The programme is still in its early stages. For more information you can go to their website: http://www.scnm.edu/ or go to the Epilepsy Moms chat forum and click on the complementary/alternative therapies page, where many members are discussing neurofeedback therapy.
